<br />
She taught us to think in broad strokes and values instead of lines or colour, something I never really do.<br />
<br />
I must have gone though half a small sketchbook with quick sketches and in the end tried to tie together what I had been practicing with what I usually do.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiw8BFP-iWa3Fq14XUMOt-uxKKIfcDapeLVXqAxc-zPfGXmFMFvR42CVOk-Gxt3c_RFWpvw4-gQGDM89ubChTjApjHBuqsFsCGmlURO5jnYGpcyaq7nJuTgd_5cvjCko-6t6XDdQFOYeg/s1600/26-ny10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1032" data-original-width="1460" height="282" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiw8BFP-iWa3Fq14XUMOt-uxKKIfcDapeLVXqAxc-zPfGXmFMFvR42CVOk-Gxt3c_RFWpvw4-gQGDM89ubChTjApjHBuqsFsCGmlURO5jnYGpcyaq7nJuTgd_5cvjCko-6t6XDdQFOYeg/s400/26-ny10.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I loved this exercise and found it liberating in some ways. Now I just need to practice it more often.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgisGlc3GbPqzRw1G7ukfk3fUgmpgpzIbAcdFwfDn-p6kearj2LyA-QE9KmT-iLWYuMqaErPe8TTIWkMsu-aMI5V2Gm6J1PhkEYK6dwfqkooUVJPmrFa6jSjBi4OKcy5YZgeYz6iqC9WEg/s1600/27-ny11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1045" data-original-width="1453" height="287" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgisGlc3GbPqzRw1G7ukfk3fUgmpgpzIbAcdFwfDn-p6kearj2LyA-QE9KmT-iLWYuMqaErPe8TTIWkMsu-aMI5V2Gm6J1PhkEYK6dwfqkooUVJPmrFa6jSjBi4OKcy5YZgeYz6iqC9WEg/s400/27-ny11.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<br />
At the end of the workshop, Mary posed for us. We had to "sketch her without sketching her". Think values and masses and let her figure appear in the drawing. As I said, fun exercise.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_jBK1UaOwifDpaEfDWDvBk539ULv9SUh_szTpEgiYXZF6RnCbxYh5vAIRZ-v6DR6HmDbXGGxs_n0459kPIcnSqLvXBkr2edyFajNaiS4wxmB1fbZp1aXXoQq5Fcm6iQR-1h2XAe6OvO0/s1600/28-ny12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="942" data-original-width="1280" height="293" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_jBK1UaOwifDpaEfDWDvBk539ULv9SUh_szTpEgiYXZF6RnCbxYh5vAIRZ-v6DR6HmDbXGGxs_n0459kPIcnSqLvXBkr2edyFajNaiS4wxmB1fbZp1aXXoQq5Fcm6iQR-1h2XAe6OvO0/s400/28-ny12.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I would have thought that I would be too tired to sketch after this intense workshop. However, on Mary's indication, I stopped at Washington Square and could not not make a quick sketch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Back at the Airbnb, in the cozy bedroom. One last sketch for the day.</div>

Marc Leibowitz had informed me that they were meeting for a sketchcrawl in Central Park at the statue of Hans Christian Andersen, where we would also enjoy some storytelling.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwkCUPEwCvF9N7u1q5uqejcBvxFcS8483DWxGQpjAMYX-G-kXCl5AfzSHYtnl9_ZUhlO8PwkGMb_vIXRlACSJGFuaOD6pWeGZ4axBRIQ0pxBsbV_RoXNE0hxx53_vges-ZzCe66XtzyzA/s1600/21-ny5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="982" data-original-width="1446" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwkCUPEwCvF9N7u1q5uqejcBvxFcS8483DWxGQpjAMYX-G-kXCl5AfzSHYtnl9_ZUhlO8PwkGMb_vIXRlACSJGFuaOD6pWeGZ4axBRIQ0pxBsbV_RoXNE0hxx53_vges-ZzCe66XtzyzA/s320/21-ny5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Since I was a little girl I have always loved stories, fairy tales and fables and the like, so this was a particular treat to me. The first storyteller was very energetic and expressive. Children and adults alike were engrossed in the stories. "Gallymanders! Gallymanders!" was something he kept saying. After some research I still don't know what it means, but it stayed with me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rest of the day was spent peacefully and around that spot. It felt so good to just enjoy the park with like-minded people, so why move?</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWAC6nNObKEJjjSOAXPVJewx2N3pCrqi8eBK1WfIiUe0W_h7b8CLQ85p5TnzHxbOA7KDv-IMdIzCyFhVFK_dQR0WaboORB5G_37aPX7_idoZgDffHmKOYTZd2wof_Syc4i64cLFGqhRAY/s1600/20b-ny4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="525" data-original-width="1435" height="117" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWAC6nNObKEJjjSOAXPVJewx2N3pCrqi8eBK1WfIiUe0W_h7b8CLQ85p5TnzHxbOA7KDv-IMdIzCyFhVFK_dQR0WaboORB5G_37aPX7_idoZgDffHmKOYTZd2wof_Syc4i64cLFGqhRAY/s320/20b-ny4.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You could really feel it was Sunday and people hanging out around Conservatory Water were relaxed, some playing with model boats, others just chatting on a bench, having a drink, enjoying the sun. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ETYUrBe0lbl6Kn-4Vy-CrPYljjGM41AKzgjRyAAU9Iksp55BUJKQwQQn0T0i7I417LvCRFJcbR-noSZ0e86apN-1lJtL7rWqBuG-y06Gf4pOqSk3BuIqOiK1xANiIZvHPUkXcN8u3EY/s1600/22-ny6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1025" data-original-width="1454" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ETYUrBe0lbl6Kn-4Vy-CrPYljjGM41AKzgjRyAAU9Iksp55BUJKQwQQn0T0i7I417LvCRFJcbR-noSZ0e86apN-1lJtL7rWqBuG-y06Gf4pOqSk3BuIqOiK1xANiIZvHPUkXcN8u3EY/s320/22-ny6.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the end of the afternoon Marc took us to a bar for a drink and draw session. I think we annoyed the servers because we were taking up so much space and putting tables together, but this being the US, a thankfully very customer-oriented culture, we got away with it.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggRMLfb2T_zwAsuEc5u9MmootHWMLGYNuN52SYP3SYvKgyUoxo6ZXXr2N6ArMjxJYgUkt3TQqPuLh2PNVZF26SjEqJPc-T5VJZrNwHWAUsU6_qFTPii474bNytt-EffgTPa5SfWlL7e4k/s1600/23-ny7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1039" data-original-width="1460" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggRMLfb2T_zwAsuEc5u9MmootHWMLGYNuN52SYP3SYvKgyUoxo6ZXXr2N6ArMjxJYgUkt3TQqPuLh2PNVZF26SjEqJPc-T5VJZrNwHWAUsU6_qFTPii474bNytt-EffgTPa5SfWlL7e4k/s320/23-ny7.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the participants was going back to the park later on for a tango lesson, so some of us joined her to continue sketching some more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I spent the whole day thinking that Central Park has to be one of the most exciting parks in the world. There is something going on at almost every corner. Every time you think you've passed something amazing, something else comes along. For example, on our way to the tango session, we stumbled upon this group of people dancing on skates, showing off their skills to people cheering. There was a Motown vibe in the air. Apparently they come here pretty much every day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I knew I would love the tango session in the park and I was sorely tempted to participate in the free lesson. Had I not been on a sketching spree I probably would have. There was such a particular atmosphere watching people dance around the statue of Shakespeare, engrossed in the music.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG-9qLnJzlzKOVUQyTh7paVudrL7dmSp-6V8D0u_fMmpvudD7RibGtaSz0m5YJRELfdg-AyqDoR8XirqbLQJW-8eJqXAP12mcTdNKx5K03s_CVIh8SPjZMghyphenhyphenAkR8EExjzskmP_Mt4Acg/s1600/24-ny8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1035" data-original-width="1460" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG-9qLnJzlzKOVUQyTh7paVudrL7dmSp-6V8D0u_fMmpvudD7RibGtaSz0m5YJRELfdg-AyqDoR8XirqbLQJW-8eJqXAP12mcTdNKx5K03s_CVIh8SPjZMghyphenhyphenAkR8EExjzskmP_Mt4Acg/s320/24-ny8.jpg" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
While I was sitting there I started a conversation with a German woman who had come to live in New York a long
time ago (she didn't even have the slightest German accent anymore). She
was very interested in my sketch, saying that she could never learn to draw.
So I took pleasure in showing her that it was much easier than she
thought. She seemed enthusiastic in the end and I like to think that I
managed to encourage her to go out and sketch. <br />

After all, countless movies and tv shows are located there.<br />
<br />
One of the things I noticed is that I felt relatively at home in spite of its huge size. Maybe it's because the city is organised in such a way that it is very easy to find your way, maybe it's just because I walked so much around on my first day that my feet hurt, of maybe simply because of the constant feeling of being in a familiar place.<br />
<br />
The AirBnb I stayed at was located on the Upper West Side, near Central Park, so that's where I went first thing in the morning on my first day. I passed Strawberry Fields, dedicated to John Lennon (though where the strawberries are, I couldn't tell), and full of tourists taking pictures with the "Imagine" sign on the ground... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
... and continued walking aimlessly until I arrived at a lake from where I had my first glimpse of the New York skyline. A bit less imposing from this vantage point, particularly given the peaceful setting. I think I would spend hours in Central Park if I lived in New York.</div>

A friend of mine recommended the city to me, saying it had a very different feeling than New York or Chicago, more European and smaller in size. So I was quite curious.<br />
<br />
As I'm a terrible tourist in that I don't much plan ahead what places to visit, on my first day I decided to follow the Freedom Trail, which leads through the most historic places linked to the American Revolution. I wanted to try and make a sketch at every one of the important sites.<br />
<br />
The terrible tourist I am thought that the trail started at Paul Revere House. It was only when I actually found the red brick road that I understood that I was mistaken. No matter, the house was actually one of the sites I was most interested in, so I started there anyway and continued until I arrived at the USS Constitution.<br />
<br />
Paul Revere House is the oldest remaining structure in downtown Boston and was Paul Revere's home at the time of his famous messenger ride in 1775. I really loved sketching this quaint little building, but knowing that trying to draw it in detail would not give me a satisfactory result, I focused mainly on shadows.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGjTp8Hl1E5DEYhspnLFH2DhECT7g0QqDfjteGzBMN_39TzgNUfXcmsDJdrLK0ye3OR4wPr7RwZGKdAVGRTlexUAtNPav6duedoBmIwdxIFua-CuvkFFOiRFEfn3XUeQc7d15a6c8GX6U/s1600/6-boston.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1040" data-original-width="1431" height="290" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGjTp8Hl1E5DEYhspnLFH2DhECT7g0QqDfjteGzBMN_39TzgNUfXcmsDJdrLK0ye3OR4wPr7RwZGKdAVGRTlexUAtNPav6duedoBmIwdxIFua-CuvkFFOiRFEfn3XUeQc7d15a6c8GX6U/s400/6-boston.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next stop on the trail is Old North Church, from where the advancement of British troops was signaled to the American revolutionaries. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiausqCmMYWQ793_lnikGOAatb9TOVBZHUovdE25MBziJxX28ZG4t4Z2GlspLu3thYPj9JyLCoTRXp-yVFFvvB93aT6bjVFrtrwBve0MhyphenhyphensT3NUr5nm2y9XN3qoP5qjKTU7B0Glm2IhNRo/s1600/7-boston2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="963" data-original-width="574" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiausqCmMYWQ793_lnikGOAatb9TOVBZHUovdE25MBziJxX28ZG4t4Z2GlspLu3thYPj9JyLCoTRXp-yVFFvvB93aT6bjVFrtrwBve0MhyphenhyphensT3NUr5nm2y9XN3qoP5qjKTU7B0Glm2IhNRo/s400/7-boston2.jpg" width="237" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On my way to the next stop, Copp's Hill Burying Ground, I passed a small memorial to soldiers fallen during the war in Afghanistan, Iraq and ISIS. The collection of dog tags was a very moving sight which I couldn't help sketching before continuing on the trail. So many young lives lost...</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9BohEqsGNhcyp6M2NS0jj6AiRy5dD69ze2qIuO5FAQuvRSgiHNV_UbEwyoF78E6PWy22vQeINH9KGt9lNSyTMQ5jeWsUv9qdfi57w7J6wk9LJH_UCeEj33EuJJrZ-3NkaH9a954mJFFI/s1600/8-boston3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1029" data-original-width="1439" height="285" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9BohEqsGNhcyp6M2NS0jj6AiRy5dD69ze2qIuO5FAQuvRSgiHNV_UbEwyoF78E6PWy22vQeINH9KGt9lNSyTMQ5jeWsUv9qdfi57w7J6wk9LJH_UCeEj33EuJJrZ-3NkaH9a954mJFFI/s400/8-boston3.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Copp's Hill Burying Ground is a cemetery dating back to the 17th century. So different from other burying grounds I have seen so far, I was very interested in the different sized head stones, how some were askew, as if marking some event that made them tilt this way and that.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next stop, Bunker Hill Monument, marking the place where the first major battle of the Revolutionary War took place in June 1775. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbwUjVQXf25FRSJ_JDOuMX1tvMYjxrO0JCcTO2qPqt8gqk08YLLK77hY93dspOGzAn8cXEc9h9lGtR9E5gYxQ017Itqytzuq6KH42LHnf7FDZONj9NFE2prTFHIsIXk4norp2OdjaxxlY/s1600/10-boston5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1417" data-original-width="1030" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbwUjVQXf25FRSJ_JDOuMX1tvMYjxrO0JCcTO2qPqt8gqk08YLLK77hY93dspOGzAn8cXEc9h9lGtR9E5gYxQ017Itqytzuq6KH42LHnf7FDZONj9NFE2prTFHIsIXk4norp2OdjaxxlY/s400/10-boston5.jpg" width="290" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, the USS Constitution or Old Ironsides as it is also called because cannonballs appeared to bounce off the warship during the historic battle with the HMS Guerriere. I love this nickname, how more bad ass can a ship get?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqPHCvhrmFlCFXIIHHZWry6nw8tbVSxQX-vbY39WHY9gvzeVeGonhcNcuQ4vifQtebgfbCCQMzBz90_FixPQdrZa5_kLWfufZH43JFxLFhRERrwphKJyGSWklV7gNqDpvmo86CyY_OmTg/s1600/11-boston6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1443" data-original-width="1018" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqPHCvhrmFlCFXIIHHZWry6nw8tbVSxQX-vbY39WHY9gvzeVeGonhcNcuQ4vifQtebgfbCCQMzBz90_FixPQdrZa5_kLWfufZH43JFxLFhRERrwphKJyGSWklV7gNqDpvmo86CyY_OmTg/s400/11-boston6.jpg" width="281" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I highly recommend the Freedom Trail to any sketchers visiting Boston. It is a way to discover the city and an important part of the United States' history, and a way to give yourself a fun sketching challenge, too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rest of my trip to Boston was spent walking around Boston Public Garden, people watching and observing the swan boats passing by...</div>

Since this was my first trip to the US, I wasn't about to just go to the USk Symposium and leave straight away. I planned to leave Chicago on Sunday evening and head to Boston by train and later continue to New York.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I spent my last day in the Windy city with some of the sketchers who were still hanging around. In the morning I joined Lynne Chapman, Tina Koyama and Kumi Matsukawa at Buckingham fountain.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Kumi, always an interesting subject to sketch. I find she has an almost samurai-like thing about her when she's in the zone. Or maybe it's just fanciful thinking on my part.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I continued the day with Paul Wang, Rob Sketcherman, Nina Johansson and Lynne. We spent a few blissfully quiet hours at Goddess and the Baker. All too soon it was time to go to the train station to start my journey to Boston.</div>

It was a long trip (around 20 hours), so I splurged and paid for a view liner roomette on the Lake Shore Limited. Once I got used to the size and layout of the cabin, it felt really cozy. As much as I enjoyed all the activity of the symposium, it did take a lot of energy and the prospect of spending almost a full day in this little nook looking out the window, reading and sketching felt like heaven.</div>

It was my first time traveling such a long distance by train and at times it almost seemed like I was in a movie. The dining wagon in particular, where the waiters would seat you at a table with strangers with whom you would strike up a conversation, or not. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had my breakfast with this middle-aged couple who were not really interested in chatting with me, but I liked the implied intimacy they shared. I would later sit for lunch with a gentleman called Henry who loved trains and had a lot of knowledge to share about them.</div>

That's one item crossed from my US bucket list.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01002414176188172189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-322545007492987220.post-90202839244060090912017-08-30T15:22:00.002+02:002017-09-07T14:02:24.302+02:00Experiencing the USk Symposium as a correspondentWorking as a USk Symposium correspondent was one of the most enriching experiences I have had in recent years. I got to experience this event I love in a way that is entirely different from being a participant.<br />
<br />
Every evening I came back to my hotel room with a pack of new sketches and memories to share on the international USk blog. I made so many drawings that I hardly know where to begin posting, so I will only share some of my favourite sketches and moments here. You can find all the posts I wrote during the symposium here:<br />

<br />
On registration day, I spent the morning with my two fellow correspondents, Wes Douglas from Chicago and Vincent Desplanche from France. Wes wanted to show us around the city, so we would find our bearings more easily the following days and so we could see some places we might not have the opportunity to go to.<br />
<br />
This sketch was made at the Bean, the two gentlemen were focused on the monument and I on them (and Elizabeth Alley in the background).<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Registration took place at the Goodman Centre, or the Hub, which was also where we gathered every day for morning announcements. The very first sketch I did there was an attempt at capturing the whole room, which didn't come out anywhere near what I wanted to do. I had a moment of panic and doubt about my ability to fulfill my correspondent tasks momentarily.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I spent that afternoon getting to know some of the local volunteers and documenting what they were doing, which helped me to find my bearings and my correspondent "style". I had been trying to do what I thought was expected of me instead of what I would naturally have done otherwise. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Hub was usually pretty calm during the day, but became more lively again in the evenings when the lectures took place. People were sitting everywhere, on the benches, on the floor, on big balls.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2p4uUoG6RlW2PGvpbCuinZ7Xj3S7h_7lNc3OcyI6bGX6mreAKTympceX_PzJCsTx1s3ehRKvKgA3gRMLhRUKCSSvH5HlumkJIbiPTePWyqUS2A61SuPawBhNHZjxtVaYNejWUuUouxtA/s1600/m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1040" data-original-width="1325" height="313" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2p4uUoG6RlW2PGvpbCuinZ7Xj3S7h_7lNc3OcyI6bGX6mreAKTympceX_PzJCsTx1s3ehRKvKgA3gRMLhRUKCSSvH5HlumkJIbiPTePWyqUS2A61SuPawBhNHZjxtVaYNejWUuUouxtA/s400/m.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I particularly liked to capture moments I find so typical in urban sketching events, like this one where Mike Daikubara was sketching Cal, one of the volunteers, while I was sketching them and I'm pretty sure I saw someone sketching me as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuhUj5rk9SUo9eVNmErpkPOz3YEBApQvwGB0tqVuZBhqnhJuqIg7WsxbuSiChPx9korpy8vqkEkAItha7QIUzXSHA9-cm3IomStaFWuxQgc-zhPP2FnT1QcVIuNY380yEyuarAcA9p8tY/s1600/k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1040" data-original-width="1327" height="312" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuhUj5rk9SUo9eVNmErpkPOz3YEBApQvwGB0tqVuZBhqnhJuqIg7WsxbuSiChPx9korpy8vqkEkAItha7QIUzXSHA9-cm3IomStaFWuxQgc-zhPP2FnT1QcVIuNY380yEyuarAcA9p8tY/s400/k.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Being a correspondent also meant running around a lot to catch as many workshops as possible. Wes, Vincent and I had 36 worshops to document, which meant an average of one per hour for each of us. The challenging part was to get from one location to another, specially when instructors decided to change locations. However, it was always worth the effort, given that each one of them had something interesting to teach. I got to catch glimpses of more workshops that I would have otherwise, some of which I would probably not have chosen to attend in the first place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made this sketch during Asnee Tasna's workshop, which was about sketching the cityscape with flat pointed pencils. I didn't have any with me, so Asnee was kind enough to give me one of his, teasing me that I should be careful not to hurt myself with the sharp tip. Cheeky guy, I loved him!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMINtL7EoLh_n0PS3EtSRce4Gsjx9JGWby5z4hAOuabVY-oAIIrcWDY8wtfAeRaZg6WX7_UM406jQR6bjQ2f2Tf_QONRwNXlY3jl325DSwwvWDzQV5CbiZZ45_RQT7KO8J906AwaTXZW0/s1600/wsasnee2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1233" data-original-width="1600" height="307" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMINtL7EoLh_n0PS3EtSRce4Gsjx9JGWby5z4hAOuabVY-oAIIrcWDY8wtfAeRaZg6WX7_UM406jQR6bjQ2f2Tf_QONRwNXlY3jl325DSwwvWDzQV5CbiZZ45_RQT7KO8J906AwaTXZW0/s400/wsasnee2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's another sketch from one of the workshops, this time João Catarino's. I only arrived at the end of the session, so I didn't hear what it was about in detail, I only know it was about capturing reflections in windows. I loved João's enthusiasm during the show and tell. He had this huge smile on his face and kept gesturing with glee.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj95PrQJWOxxVfbO7az_TE28LaKPAaTot1Cte4aC5BJBqeY7O8ZQ5LJRBzym5lKVbJPcQK_8X8enldY0WulHYD9CmpUbA2OFBagp3JMLt3BuEq-5m_7vB68hmg2grNr84xsnBgg7RLCcAs/s1600/p.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1036" data-original-width="1319" height="313" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj95PrQJWOxxVfbO7az_TE28LaKPAaTot1Cte4aC5BJBqeY7O8ZQ5LJRBzym5lKVbJPcQK_8X8enldY0WulHYD9CmpUbA2OFBagp3JMLt3BuEq-5m_7vB68hmg2grNr84xsnBgg7RLCcAs/s400/p.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Being a correspondent also meant being on my own a lot. Nobody else had the same schedule and I was left pretty much to my own devices. Which also meant that I could take the time to capture some unexpected events, like this protest held by hot dog vendors on a double decker bus in front of ABC News TV station. I love the unexpected, specially when I get to see grown men dressed as mustard dispensers and hot dogs.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLLB5F8zZUOTo-AMgOn1ASfiqPf3I0J2hmlfwODNJDXgZYmjssw7WwA9xhF0zxcycXUDjzwwZmYIrqwHc7dHk53IHvSiecmOr92yg1HtDRc8RQgKqwlnK6yavBkBUdKvL6_7BOPkMeZ1k/s1600/hotdogs2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1167" data-original-width="1600" height="291" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLLB5F8zZUOTo-AMgOn1ASfiqPf3I0J2hmlfwODNJDXgZYmjssw7WwA9xhF0zxcycXUDjzwwZmYIrqwHc7dHk53IHvSiecmOr92yg1HtDRc8RQgKqwlnK6yavBkBUdKvL6_7BOPkMeZ1k/s400/hotdogs2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the evenings I often had dinner with different people, usually the ones I had just been hanging out with. They were quiet moments around dinner or a few drinks, great after a whole day of running around. I like this sketch because it shows two people, Lapin and Josiah, who had been admiring each other's work online for years and finally got to meet in person. And how about the fact that they were both wearing flowery shirts? These guys were meant to be friends.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
To finish this post, here are two of my very last symposium sketches. After the announcement of Porto as next year's symposium host, and the many goodbyes at the Hub, the Portuguese crowd and a bunch of other sketchers went to the 2Twenty2 bar to celebrate. We played Jenga and sketched (what else?) until the bar closed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We laughed, made plans for next year which we are not sure we can keep, and said our last goodbyes, knowing we would meet again to sketch together somewhere else in the world.</div>

It was an adventure in many ways, first because I had never had such an intensive sketching experience before, and second because it was my first time traveling to the United States. Saying that I was excited about this opportunity is an understatement.<br />
<br />
I sketched so much over the last three weeks that I hardly know where to start with my posts, so I'll start with the beginning: my travel there and the first days before the symposium.<br />
<br />
There are no direct flights from Luxembourg to Chicago, so I took a flight leaving from Bruxelles with a layover in Reykjavik. The day started with an uneventful train ride to the Belgian capital...<br />
<br />

A short flight later and wait at Reykjavik airport and I could finally relax on the plane to Chicago, where I squeezed the obligatory plane sketch before settling in front of a movie and chatting with my friendly neighbour, an older gentleman from Texas. </div>

<br />
I spent my first day in Chicago in a very relaxed way, in the Art Institute of Chicago and sketching some of the sights. I suspected I wouldn't have much time to do it later (and it turns out I was right).<br />
<br />
Tackling the city's skyline was quite a challenge for me, as I was not used to this kind of subject at all. Everything is so big and fitting it all on paper was a bit daunting.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj7BlKVIuYrc6awACT9gUUYlwnA-VBkOd3MDbjT7sUo2ZroWoU51ej_77MMYt2tpMgb44Kjl3sk4mEOH_raW4HaZniGIKJv0bS4_SpTnEMsb6TQsB01l1pJ34Loqw0RJ-86bA14MG4fuA/s1600/skyline2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="588" data-original-width="1600" height="146" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjj7BlKVIuYrc6awACT9gUUYlwnA-VBkOd3MDbjT7sUo2ZroWoU51ej_77MMYt2tpMgb44Kjl3sk4mEOH_raW4HaZniGIKJv0bS4_SpTnEMsb6TQsB01l1pJ34Loqw0RJ-86bA14MG4fuA/s400/skyline2.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In contrast, Cloudgate, or the Bean as it is more commonly known, was one of the most fun monuments to sketch ever! I loved the mirror surface with its distortions and watching people goofing around it and taking funny pictures. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Not far from the Bean, Crown fountain, another fun place to be. The fountain's surface displays a video of faces from which water spurts out regularly before changing again. I was amused by the different expressions on the faces, from amused to cheeky to almost relieved. People were enjoying the water in the heat, particularly children. I didn't get to finish this sketch, but I had fun with it.</div>

The day before the symposium started I was invited with the instructors and other volunteers to visit Robie House, one of Frank Lloyd Wright's famous works. It was the occasion to meet old friends and make new ones, as usual my favourite part of any USk event.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a short bus ride we were all sketching in front and inside the house. I admit I was not overly interested in the house, unlike some of my
architect companions who were in awe of it, but it was a beautiful place
to see and a very pleasant way to slowly enter the symposium spirit.</div>

<br />
Knowing that I would probably not have time to sketch the building on the big day, I had gone there a few weeks earlier to make sure to add it to my reportage. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY29w1gWRVih2WwODP9d82L25FYNgrK9GYBH3omiAKomu2WTACT7XCTesL7DLJ7ZkOaCIScp6jyG-MmPOieK6B5erfzBiVeSvN_IHBlRvYB1SLDqmYIFsUeTwpR9bMS3p_87UxXbq2rr8/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="850" data-original-width="1600" height="211" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY29w1gWRVih2WwODP9d82L25FYNgrK9GYBH3omiAKomu2WTACT7XCTesL7DLJ7ZkOaCIScp6jyG-MmPOieK6B5erfzBiVeSvN_IHBlRvYB1SLDqmYIFsUeTwpR9bMS3p_87UxXbq2rr8/s400/2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Equipped with my custom made concertina sketchbook, the first subject that immediately caught my eye as guests arrived was my friends' daughter in her cute pink outfit, on her cute pink tricycle with pink balloons in her hand. She looked adorable and almost stole the show from the bride away. <br />
<br />
But this day was a family day anyway, and you could feel it at every moment. Hundreds of photos were taken before the ceremony started, among my favourite seeing the happy couple with their girl together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp5c9OyjATmpXo4POEEXRecEgU-LkoYbVbX_zHY3es94TfjNwkwK6PBGy6MBKK9IOkYPL9Ulh3NMi7K2joSsVB0_bhYCHJ9SabASXWCaigV6acuvuyWHtSEoUIZaVV_x2hOj4FlVeBiFM/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="856" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp5c9OyjATmpXo4POEEXRecEgU-LkoYbVbX_zHY3es94TfjNwkwK6PBGy6MBKK9IOkYPL9Ulh3NMi7K2joSsVB0_bhYCHJ9SabASXWCaigV6acuvuyWHtSEoUIZaVV_x2hOj4FlVeBiFM/s400/3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The ceremony was short and held by a civil servant who knew the couple, followed by drinks on the town hall's small private terrace.<br />
<br />
Toy goats were distributed to the couple's older siblings, a Luxembourg tradition when the younger siblings get married before the older ones. I have actually been to weddings where live goats were present. Always a funny moment.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLXmYhrNhbEi8kzFimd77oudSrBEjiIMlOu-vgiUI2nBXR_7u2Un-3WmeSbjFLWug4ghOROcG_GIY3_fXO1CBo2eCKuefi6CuBfAg2HOAWRFDQV2LOO6PYWLoxUoSJWIv68xXi_F8s0Gc/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="836" data-original-width="1600" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLXmYhrNhbEi8kzFimd77oudSrBEjiIMlOu-vgiUI2nBXR_7u2Un-3WmeSbjFLWug4ghOROcG_GIY3_fXO1CBo2eCKuefi6CuBfAg2HOAWRFDQV2LOO6PYWLoxUoSJWIv68xXi_F8s0Gc/s400/4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The party of invited guests was very small, literally only family plus one friend - me, which felt like a real privilege.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVHx1koxg-m_ALf92XvyyM4F3MbB6hGP9qkhqOYvkdApsxtHOBNu1svObsE1Iu0NJbfBStrzoNO0faCmN2k6uH_-uNiyvZGNHunjMMPJCWHMKnyW-MbA3nR8osIzM3KEDOUp6VknjMzcQ/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="851" data-original-width="1600" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVHx1koxg-m_ALf92XvyyM4F3MbB6hGP9qkhqOYvkdApsxtHOBNu1svObsE1Iu0NJbfBStrzoNO0faCmN2k6uH_-uNiyvZGNHunjMMPJCWHMKnyW-MbA3nR8osIzM3KEDOUp6VknjMzcQ/s400/5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The food was delicious and we ate so much that it almost felt like a Portuguese family gathering. I hadn't felt so stuffed for a while. It was hard to put the fork down, haha.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgft-wsfV2T6EpNYa0Su3M8NmxVfXPVZGjvBQIwqiHP8RSy0fGUWx7dIUcpOJKWy06ykTf8hpUBceNOz_4dSiZgNURlOq1F3vphGPGl-5RIP0PQEi4Pu8VSuPNSSq7hLUbSDMVSyv9xy0w/s1600/6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="860" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgft-wsfV2T6EpNYa0Su3M8NmxVfXPVZGjvBQIwqiHP8RSy0fGUWx7dIUcpOJKWy06ykTf8hpUBceNOz_4dSiZgNURlOq1F3vphGPGl-5RIP0PQEi4Pu8VSuPNSSq7hLUbSDMVSyv9xy0w/s400/6.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wasn't sure I would manage to fill the sketchbook, but in the end I didn't even have enough pages to document everything I wanted. Just barely enough space to squeeze in the wedding cake and capture a cute scene where the bride's bouquet lay next to her daughter's cute kitty purse. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This was probably one of the nicest weddings I have attended so far. Maybe because the group was so small, maybe because everything was delicious, and assuredly because it was a very special friend's special day.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01002414176188172189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-322545007492987220.post-90846632911643361082017-07-06T14:01:00.000+02:002017-07-10T14:02:45.449+02:00Celebrating Luxembourg's industrial past at the Fête des Hauts Fourneaux<br />
For this month's sketchcrawl we decided to head to Belval again, in the South of the country. The site of the old blast furnace was open to visitors for their annual "<i>Fête des Hauts Fourneaux</i>".<br />
<br />
I always find this location very impressive, but seeing it come alive with activities and music made it all the more interesting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcLhesQfNQGT8NdzxMDdlh-WkJdGTqqr6hat9IAZ6leDtWirfgc90NRJj4DLu9vmWvHm5khcvP01bj7ZcqlrlbwAk3tn3kfPazByEzPqG4QXG6579-xCNsRjFqjilSwr8uuj0_VUmxJs4/s1600/belval.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="579" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcLhesQfNQGT8NdzxMDdlh-WkJdGTqqr6hat9IAZ6leDtWirfgc90NRJj4DLu9vmWvHm5khcvP01bj7ZcqlrlbwAk3tn3kfPazByEzPqG4QXG6579-xCNsRjFqjilSwr8uuj0_VUmxJs4/s640/belval.jpg" width="231" /></a></div>
<br />
Inside the blast furnace, a group of men were demonstrating how it used to work on a miniature model. Their protective gear with their silver outfits, thick gloves and big helmets reminded me of a sci-fi movie.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDz9k9Yuq1pIu1bdkiZQlrJWggBEQ_9yX4neEZOBN3M84M2a1d5VdUTtvAyeTh9oDcaEqATzTei9xuT8YUzeTzfFKIj33s8FHdnyFh9rHD1PgqRNftoboyQTYg7dq9yTx3K0saccPrnco/s1600/fonte2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1397" data-original-width="1400" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDz9k9Yuq1pIu1bdkiZQlrJWggBEQ_9yX4neEZOBN3M84M2a1d5VdUTtvAyeTh9oDcaEqATzTei9xuT8YUzeTzfFKIj33s8FHdnyFh9rHD1PgqRNftoboyQTYg7dq9yTx3K0saccPrnco/s400/fonte2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was very impressive to see molten metal come out of the pipe at regular intervals, reminding everyone that the protective gear was indeed essential for this task.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJxIWVrWMGWvXpmGJKemjf0uQYywXhl1Ec0x1FPz8sEV5PxNmIN-0-1E3GB_SvHFEVSGMbj4S0zM3dgEXjm3d1CxlX5jTS4hnHoXn3oLY-21X8__UFJsRgRoJft54t09RT3tW0mNE98s4/s1600/fonte.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1422" data-original-width="1400" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJxIWVrWMGWvXpmGJKemjf0uQYywXhl1Ec0x1FPz8sEV5PxNmIN-0-1E3GB_SvHFEVSGMbj4S0zM3dgEXjm3d1CxlX5jTS4hnHoXn3oLY-21X8__UFJsRgRoJft54t09RT3tW0mNE98s4/s400/fonte.jpg" width="393" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's hard to believe that Luxembourg's economy once rested entirely on metallurgy. Witnessing such demonstrations is essential not to forget that past.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a while, due to the wet and slightly cold atmosphere outside, some of us found refuge at a neighbouring café for a pleasant session of drinking, drawing and chatting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Luxembourg celebrates its national holiday on the 23rd June. It's the date when we officially celebrate the Grand-Duke's birthday (though his actual birthday is on a different date).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
However, the evening of the 22nd is when the actual partying takes place. The city is alive with concerts at every corner, there is a parade and big fireworks. It's the occasion to witness the city in a way you never see it the rest of the year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That day I left work early, hoping to take advantage of the warm weather to do some sketching. Unfortunately the weather was too good. Not something I say very often here, lol. The intense heat was too much to bear and I only managed to do a couple of quick sketches.</div>

<br />
One fine Saturday in spring, I stumbled across horse-drawn carriages in the middle of the streets of the capital. Luxembourg is not like some cities where you can find this type of transportation mainly for the benefit of tourists, so my surprise was complete.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzqk9t89KlyOECF8AD4xsNnH_n3A7tWyQiGAON6szZsy8L-Xjg4SXaarlvPJw6ooGDQ6g_mrIw3gdT2LIqbALGvsaKxWaej1EQoXlpQnckxmY6yDjf5tR9yq3rLW0TDipwtd2hRUIGCKw/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" id="id_4679_b073_9395_a522" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzqk9t89KlyOECF8AD4xsNnH_n3A7tWyQiGAON6szZsy8L-Xjg4SXaarlvPJw6ooGDQ6g_mrIw3gdT2LIqbALGvsaKxWaej1EQoXlpQnckxmY6yDjf5tR9yq3rLW0TDipwtd2hRUIGCKw/" style="height: auto; margin-top: 4px; width: 500px;" title="" tooltip="" /> </a></div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
Until I remembered that part of the city had been taken over by farmers that weekend for an event they called <i>Bauerenhaff an der Stad</i>
(farm in the city), the perfect occasion to whip out sketchbook and pen for a few quick sketches before heading to an appointment. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

to show their work and products to consumers and city folk in
particular.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The children's response was enthusiastic to say the least and in some cases I wondered if it was their first time seeing real life animals. </div>

It must be a real treat for farmers to see such positive reactions. All in all, it looked like this first edition was a pretty successful event, which I hope will be repeated in the future. How else can a city dweller like me get to sketch a few animals? </div>

After last week's international sketchcrawl weekend, I was not sure many local sketchers would be interested in participating to the usual monthly outing.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However, we ended up being a group of five hardcore sketchers to explore the area between Place de Metz and Place de Paris through our drawings.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Explore might be a big word. After sketching at the <i>Rousegärtchen</i> on one of the very convenient benches, the grey weather and looming rain chased us to a bar nearby.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The <i>Paname</i>, the unofficial name Parisians give to the French capital, is very aptly named, as it is located on Place de Paris. A trendy and cozy place, many people were enjoying their Sunday afternoon there. Plus a handful of curious sketchers.</div>

Maybe it was because we had nothing to take care of, except being at one or two meeting points in time.<br />
<br />
When I arrived at the morning gathering point at Abbaye Neumünster there were already a few people busy at work. No need for any kind of speech or explanations, people just started sketching away as they arrived and I just joined the fun. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL_kdFZGQyJIaaEcuinf-bHqUjC6QtEvhpKCyiDnNHOW92wwfnhi1Hpaj4uLz-LNlfl7vITGs9egrfTjqUoxx6zMlwzlNiENUh4lEJBAQnFdSPylYFzURoosxhq4RK9EoNQLexbcT7vLQ/s1600/18192616_10155370000909802_5377318291119706664_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL_kdFZGQyJIaaEcuinf-bHqUjC6QtEvhpKCyiDnNHOW92wwfnhi1Hpaj4uLz-LNlfl7vITGs9egrfTjqUoxx6zMlwzlNiENUh4lEJBAQnFdSPylYFzURoosxhq4RK9EoNQLexbcT7vLQ/s400/18192616_10155370000909802_5377318291119706664_o.jpg" width="396" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The place was made even more interesting by the fact that there were preparations for Labour Day and the Urban Trail was happening at the same time. I know some of the sketchers tried to draw the runners passing us by, but I was more focused on our own event. How could I miss a chance to sketch Lolo sitting on the ground, sketching the beautiful abbey?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also had time to have a proper lunch this time, with my friend Tessy, Julien, Isabelle and Angel, a sketcher who had come all the way from the UK to sketch with us! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oscar's has some of the best burgers in town and a very sketchable interior decoration. What else could we need?</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My last sketch, and one of the highlights of the weekend, is a portrait of Rolf Schöter, one of my favourite sketchers. I really admire his style, so watching him sketch and get some tips from him was a really great experience. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The whole weekend I kept marveling at the fact that so many people came,
some from quite far away. And seeing sketchers again that I had met
before at other USk events in my own city felt amazing!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was such a thrill to see that people were happy and loved the city. We were even asked to make it an annual event. I say: "Why not?" It's well worth the effort after all. </div>

<br />
This last weekend we hosted around 100 sketchers, both locals and from neighbouring countries. We even had a guest who came all the way from Norway to participate in our event!<br />
<br />
Saturday I had to find a balance between looking out for people, a short interview for the local news network, answering phone calls and sketching throughout the weekend. I have to admit that I did a lot of running around that day, including a quick stop at the Duck Race that was taking place in the Patrusse valley with a few sketchers.<br />

Many families had gathered to see 16,000 plastic ducks being dumped in
the water and "race" for charity. Unfortunately there was a shortage of water, so it
was less spectacular than I expected, and there were so many people
that I didn't get to see much racing. I was told the view from on top of
the bridge was better though, so I might try that instead next year.<br />

Coming back up for air, in a way, I settled with some of my fellow sketchers near the <i>Musée Nationale d'Histoire et d'Art</i>. Much more relaxing after the big crowds around the Duck Race.<br />

Every now and then, when the weather is nice and I can enjoy a walk around the city's ledge I can't help thinking how beautiful this little city is.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Following the different trails around the city you can find hundreds of picturesque sights and spots to sketch, between the remains of the ancient fortress and the beautiful valley underneath, you would be hard-pressed not to stop and enjoy the view.</div>

The reopening of the Adolphe bridge was the perfect occasion. It is one of my favourite places in the city and boasts one of the prettiest views over the "ville haute".<br />
<br />
The bridge, also called <i>Nei Bréck</i> (new bridge) by the locals, is one of the most iconic monuments in the city and had been closed off for renovations and improvements for the future tram to run through. <br />
<br />
I was decidedly a bit naïve in my eagerness to sketch the bridge, for when I arrived it was still covered by the scaffolding... No sketching my favourite bridge today! So instead I sat down in the middle of the temporary bridge next to it, looking back at the building of the state bank, another iconic building. It is where the original headquarters of the European Coal and Steel Community were, the forebearer of the European Union.<br />
<br />
This view, with traces of the working site soon to be removed gave me a sense of documenting another, far smaller, moment in history.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDcdnlhWEEBtcFs7M0ZVu0naN-cylog-fIhD8mzOtGdl-GMs-gBwvul7S4uZCvS7t0radDOuTV7wQRbghLlWaZzm-4TiMThyphenhyphenjaJENXqq3eDQ-BbZnaRg1d8kV_n3W_J75sIyMeLch1Te4/s1600/spuerkees.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDcdnlhWEEBtcFs7M0ZVu0naN-cylog-fIhD8mzOtGdl-GMs-gBwvul7S4uZCvS7t0radDOuTV7wQRbghLlWaZzm-4TiMThyphenhyphenjaJENXqq3eDQ-BbZnaRg1d8kV_n3W_J75sIyMeLch1Te4/s400/spuerkees.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
However, the day was decidedly windy and I was soon covered in gravel and sand, so I stubbornly finished my sketch as fast as I could and moved on to a more secluded location between the trees, from where I could make a quick sketch of the tower.<br />
<br />

<br />
On Saturday, we attended the guided tour organised with Musee Dräi Eechelen and LUCA around the Adolphe bridge, or "Nei Bréck" (new bridge), as the locals call it. The bridge had been closed for renovations and to adapt the infrastructure for the future tram. It is great to have it back!<br />
<br />
The tour was guided by Prof. Robert Philippart, who is a real expert on Luxembourg's history. While I wasn't able to hear all the information he provided (there was a big group of people and I was focused on my sketching), I did hear a few interesting tidbits, like for example the fact that the bridge's decorations were designed by craft workers as a way to promote their know-how, and not by artists or architects as is usually the case. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_wT33Q1nZwdJITj_zQoTXMhL_dNMHTPMEFmBcFw4qRebkrnu1m9BRsqJNkL8J4uiGwn6FYUoct43WMz10O_dgYpqmoAs9zSl1KzdQf347UV68F4zPI83n8dWWCG3Izq0EJ-stZG_hEfw/s1600/visite+guidee2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_wT33Q1nZwdJITj_zQoTXMhL_dNMHTPMEFmBcFw4qRebkrnu1m9BRsqJNkL8J4uiGwn6FYUoct43WMz10O_dgYpqmoAs9zSl1KzdQf347UV68F4zPI83n8dWWCG3Izq0EJ-stZG_hEfw/s400/visite+guidee2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I have to admit that I was more interested in sketching our tour guide and group than the surroundings, particularly given the fact that the bridge is still covered with scaffolding.<br />
<br />
There was a lot of enthusiasm for our sketching group among the crowd. Our guide was happy with the experience as well. Hopefully we will be able to repeat it in the future. <br />
<br />

<br />
On Sunday we had our monthly outing, this time far from the crowds of the capital, in Grevenmacher, at the border with Germany.<br />
<br />
It couldn't have been a more different sketchcrawl with wonderful weather and sedate Sunday pace.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It was very pleasant to sketch in the sun, observing the families enjoying their Sunday afternoon. A group of children popped by to see what I was doing, asking me where they were on my sketch.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The afternoon ended - how else? - around drinks on a terrace. </div>
A few months ago I had the opportunity to attend a concert rehearsal at the Philharmonie. The philharmonic hall elaborated by Christian de Portzamparc is one of my favourite concert venues in Luxembourg. While I unfortunately did not have time to sketch the beautiful building during the guided tour we had, I was able to get a couple of sketches done during the rehearsal itself.<br />
<br />
Besides a couple of other guided tour groups, there was one man sitting in front of me who seemed to be following the music along on a music score. Although I can read notes, I would be stumped if I had to read the score of a whole orchestra! I wondered if he was a music critic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAw5Uhz36T-n0DF3y0h5eM-UL_5ehyphenhyphen-U_vo2VRGCVfBtZSr-3aEjpQSYOYQDxZ-S1FCKOjHT57lYuExZLT5GQggT3ZRGqEJkd9zGvipun0HNgODGP2IQGPMYYoNkKn2TOfre_-YlZWZ04/s1600/philharmoniea.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="307" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAw5Uhz36T-n0DF3y0h5eM-UL_5ehyphenhyphen-U_vo2VRGCVfBtZSr-3aEjpQSYOYQDxZ-S1FCKOjHT57lYuExZLT5GQggT3ZRGqEJkd9zGvipun0HNgODGP2IQGPMYYoNkKn2TOfre_-YlZWZ04/s400/philharmoniea.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't remember the name of the piece, but it was a more modern composition, difficult to follow. The full experience involved the use of instruments among the audience, which allowed me to see one of them up close.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were sitting too far from the stage for me to sketch the musicians, but I was able to catch the conductor's dramatic poses as well as some of his (to me) cryptic comments to the orchestra.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizKkbF30tK7oGdhoqsyvWMMgDZWJfHuPWktDugjzilCgj2XLpmxcp66RDzkVrPb4oW_uf0HUf8rD4EO1P-Xi4Dw4wJAJGJtXakL3jAFfJwPKIv54e-ppbxxJo59Uxt_z2tPhTCq8zKvX0/s1600/philharmonie2aba.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="307" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizKkbF30tK7oGdhoqsyvWMMgDZWJfHuPWktDugjzilCgj2XLpmxcp66RDzkVrPb4oW_uf0HUf8rD4EO1P-Xi4Dw4wJAJGJtXakL3jAFfJwPKIv54e-ppbxxJo59Uxt_z2tPhTCq8zKvX0/s400/philharmonie2aba.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I can't say that it was a piece I would have paid money to listen to, it was not harmonious enough, but it was indeed a very interesting rehearsal to witness. </div>

This location was first used keeping steam locomotives and their maintenance. Later it worked as a repair shop for buses.<br />
<br />
Toward the end of the 20th century, they were added to the list of classified monuments and renovated to be used as exhibition spaces. Today, they host concerts, exhibitions, a pub and a variety of cultural events.<br />
<br />
We met in the afternoon as usual and were joined by Jonathan, a fellow urban sketcher from the UK who was visiting the city that weekend. Unfortunately it had to be one of the wettest days of the year so far. We jokingly commented to Jonathan that it was probably not a big change from the weather at home.<br />
<br />
Our group split between those who wanted to stay in dry space and those crazy enough to try to sketch on the roofed overpass between the Rotondes and the Luxembourg train station. I joined the second group.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
It would have been a perfect location despite the rain, had it not been for the strong wind pushing water through some of the openings in the overpass. In spite of those conditions, I was pretty proud to manage a decent sketch. <br />
<br />
However, after a while we all had to concede to the weather and headed inside to the Rotonde's pub, the Buvette, for a cosy session of hot drinks and sketching. <br />

<br />
The festival is organized by a non-profit organization and has grown so much over the years that it now takes place at the Luxexpo, a huge hall that must have been a warehouse in the past.<br />
<br />
It is the occasion for smaller non-profit organizations whose aim is to share their culture and promote diversity and citizenship to show their activities and glimpses of their traditions.<br />
<br />
Over three days people are treated to free concerts and demonstrations and have the possibility to try a variety of food from all over the world.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIhn1eCTnTTxT89xHvoMuDKQ9n9LCXWoRl2TJuWrU-k2eg2jyCttq8oSOnuU3fJNz6485j-TXc1x6gCzGcbRbz4eMBxXNkIngfVgKVwVb9a8H3OuOgG9LB2GNgoQP2ZkEd1GAhK6eLVXM/s1600/festival+resto2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIhn1eCTnTTxT89xHvoMuDKQ9n9LCXWoRl2TJuWrU-k2eg2jyCttq8oSOnuU3fJNz6485j-TXc1x6gCzGcbRbz4eMBxXNkIngfVgKVwVb9a8H3OuOgG9LB2GNgoQP2ZkEd1GAhK6eLVXM/s400/festival+resto2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I spent an afternoon there sketching with a friend. The most difficult task was to choose a subject and find a place where we wouldn't be shoved by people from all sides.<br />
<br />
I was particularly attracted by the colourful and lively African stands. Many were selling handicrafts like decorations, handbags, clothes and jewellery. Impossible to resist! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ3ecwx9Arhrc3NIXKgnUug0zYDD9ffACjFengOtZ1lNYGiQjeWyJkNnlLlzf27RK_gT5JY2WylnY_8rpDDLcp8UhSfcavAEOoqJwMYinCmU1G0RHkLm_TnZ73I5k8sSZgNW4A-d9r5vI/s1600/festival2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ3ecwx9Arhrc3NIXKgnUug0zYDD9ffACjFengOtZ1lNYGiQjeWyJkNnlLlzf27RK_gT5JY2WylnY_8rpDDLcp8UhSfcavAEOoqJwMYinCmU1G0RHkLm_TnZ73I5k8sSZgNW4A-d9r5vI/s400/festival2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There was a surprise at almost every corner, like this Ethiopian stand serving Ethiopian coffee prepared in what I assume is the traditional way. It was the strongest coffee I had ever tasted, but also one of the best I had ever tasted.<br />
<br />
The lady serving it was extremely graceful, pouring the beverage in small cups in exactly the same movement over and over again. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Sitting on small stools at yellow and red tables, it was impossible to resist sketching the beautiful coffee setup.<br />

We had the choice between the Antiques Fair and a Wine Salon. I wasn't surprised that everyone in the group chose to explore the Antiques Fair.<br />
<br />
The organizers kindly let us enter for free when they hears that we were enthusiastic amateur artists.<br />
<br />
While waiting for a couple of latecomers, I sketched a stand exhibiting a few frames. There was not much movement there, most people went straight for the antiquities and artworks displayed inside the hall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-bNy0bhzb1o4fJ9QowvFaca-w7h8A4ppFo8X6DtiSgRXAKXEide0ePeV_F9mcbMlquIbQZOn6uhTEGC0gm6zzmzDp5TH0UTEsw9GOaCFv-NpfCf_Z-JtNNYSCWKQWcHDJTlcgNN_dm8Y/s1600/luxexpoa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-bNy0bhzb1o4fJ9QowvFaca-w7h8A4ppFo8X6DtiSgRXAKXEide0ePeV_F9mcbMlquIbQZOn6uhTEGC0gm6zzmzDp5TH0UTEsw9GOaCFv-NpfCf_Z-JtNNYSCWKQWcHDJTlcgNN_dm8Y/s400/luxexpoa.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The Luxexpo is a huge hall whose size can be adapted to fit the needs of the different fairs, exhibitions and festivals taking place there. I found the contrast between the venue and what it was exhibiting quite interesting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjEjQRCzaQxKvNlRIxH7ndQUccWdQ4lxw51dr3xetpLBGpJUo53zTQGH7MJacKc5SaivUG6mydIRKF-pM_1z62yuH_0nzn51zg1B3zK3Rs_PyzE6b_uBdhL0aZyTWSFXZwdlqWCE-PLt8/s1600/luxexpo2a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjEjQRCzaQxKvNlRIxH7ndQUccWdQ4lxw51dr3xetpLBGpJUo53zTQGH7MJacKc5SaivUG6mydIRKF-pM_1z62yuH_0nzn51zg1B3zK3Rs_PyzE6b_uBdhL0aZyTWSFXZwdlqWCE-PLt8/s400/luxexpo2a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
While I was making the sketch above, a group of Germans blocked the view, so instead of getting annoyed about that I decided to sketch them as fast as possible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6zBjkaS5Sp_3v6-admGl3IexH5eeb_juShq4msm7LbFV2d01c4kxr2uAIpe_PbQXJhB8Um7GgCDjmJOkqJ_8UR4_FgN2uwZ8ePMBjePPylMn9Yi4DO_xTgbCjEvQzGy1nDz2Oldxk9VI/s1600/luxexpo3a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6zBjkaS5Sp_3v6-admGl3IexH5eeb_juShq4msm7LbFV2d01c4kxr2uAIpe_PbQXJhB8Um7GgCDjmJOkqJ_8UR4_FgN2uwZ8ePMBjePPylMn9Yi4DO_xTgbCjEvQzGy1nDz2Oldxk9VI/s400/luxexpo3a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
There were so many interesting objects and artworks on display! It was difficult to choose what to sketch first. This display of old toys was a no-brainer, though. It really felt like I was in a small antiques shop somewhere and not in a huge hall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc5FGBkHqzsgJa1V1lEf1mZ0Pbz5HMFHVkZfwh59PH5h-_HWlEYLzRYuUfrpycOCb2ctC3BExQQTuF2Y439p7_XmjyKzhyphenhyphenGKlP87EkKqQ6rc9FWHbUWqiFpDunyNBLLLUfyzjQv1TeL8M/s1600/luxexpo4a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="313" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc5FGBkHqzsgJa1V1lEf1mZ0Pbz5HMFHVkZfwh59PH5h-_HWlEYLzRYuUfrpycOCb2ctC3BExQQTuF2Y439p7_XmjyKzhyphenhyphenGKlP87EkKqQ6rc9FWHbUWqiFpDunyNBLLLUfyzjQv1TeL8M/s400/luxexpo4a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The day ended with a coffee at one of the temporary bars. All in all, it was a great venue to spend a cold winter afternoon in good company.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01002414176188172189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-322545007492987220.post-282542132556217182017-02-08T15:00:00.000+01:002017-02-08T15:00:01.338+01:00Sketching with the USK NetherlandsThe <a href="https://urbansketchers-netherlands.blogspot.lu/">Urban Sketchers Netherlands</a> organised a sketchcrawl in Maastricht last December. Since the city is about 2 hours away by car, some of us sketchers from Luxembourg decided to go and join them for the day.<br />
<br />
I arrived just in the nick of time for a workshop help by <a href="http://renefijten.blogspot.lu/">René Fijten</a>. The idea of the workshop was to document a place going from the general feeling to a detail. René is a great teacher and he was kind enough to translate everything for the non Dutch speakers so we could all benefit from the exercise as much as possible.<br />
<br />
For the first exercise, René asked us to sketch the general view of our meeting place, describe it as we saw it. Was it a busy place? a small location? etc.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqKXZXUQ3ShjDvMWWoLp8xy2Pygwfiy-Edevd8pmC_rDZHs5hsPp6rvghfk97WahK2CDt0KbDz5Ov8x2PXNphgGTMPrWK-BZoqz1yz8U6MMOB1PZ_vjdFcvVz0C28VveSI6Py72TSVmU8/s1600/maastricht+4b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="198" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqKXZXUQ3ShjDvMWWoLp8xy2Pygwfiy-Edevd8pmC_rDZHs5hsPp6rvghfk97WahK2CDt0KbDz5Ov8x2PXNphgGTMPrWK-BZoqz1yz8U6MMOB1PZ_vjdFcvVz0C28VveSI6Py72TSVmU8/s400/maastricht+4b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then we stopped at a passage. Again: what were our impressions?</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSOworuPblDxQIBGlpz4qAWHqzPwY_ov5lK0Ij4YliXfFr84Bj_1JryuocnCZROaGQfLH_7zeGJJwax4r-dyVam7ziSUnsS2UIugl1FlC1U6lzDL2uCTWHhn-ICEvFrQHUjp5tIbb6UUE/s1600/maastricht+3a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSOworuPblDxQIBGlpz4qAWHqzPwY_ov5lK0Ij4YliXfFr84Bj_1JryuocnCZROaGQfLH_7zeGJJwax4r-dyVam7ziSUnsS2UIugl1FlC1U6lzDL2uCTWHhn-ICEvFrQHUjp5tIbb6UUE/s640/maastricht+3a.jpg" width="315" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We then had to choose one of the facades that were more interesting to us and document it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1BcnFZqSAx-IKdKQ25wxYACEeludzKpKOt5-zdjXhiNrKbMYVSRHDBluZf3HGHkAiQWd3A1mKZRywsWFzhHzLe6hhSMZpVONq4HXfzQ4cYjkeDybz1qStYtdAVGK5Jv0kAv0EBSJs-uQ/s1600/maastricht+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1BcnFZqSAx-IKdKQ25wxYACEeludzKpKOt5-zdjXhiNrKbMYVSRHDBluZf3HGHkAiQWd3A1mKZRywsWFzhHzLe6hhSMZpVONq4HXfzQ4cYjkeDybz1qStYtdAVGK5Jv0kAv0EBSJs-uQ/s400/maastricht+5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
And finally, finish with a small detail.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5DvJDgxch6ZwazS8fmgBPs-Z6TNQ10bv18ALmVi9yJa5kD9BKYKPqXbClWde4_cdJkfxXlGkt7EHhbfqAXch8ZMHqLgiqRTpfR2eLIhz9ApEG0KW22GlpjAFPIO6HYUepNPRzd8KgRNc/s1600/maastricht+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5DvJDgxch6ZwazS8fmgBPs-Z6TNQ10bv18ALmVi9yJa5kD9BKYKPqXbClWde4_cdJkfxXlGkt7EHhbfqAXch8ZMHqLgiqRTpfR2eLIhz9ApEG0KW22GlpjAFPIO6HYUepNPRzd8KgRNc/s400/maastricht+6.jpg" width="380" /></a></div>
<br />
I found this approach very interesting and a good exercise to keep in mind when sketching outside. I think it would make for a very interesting composition on a big double page, for example.<br />
<br />
After the workshop, and after lunch, I joined other sketchers at the bookstore Dominicanen, an old church re-purposed as a library and a gorgeous place.<br />
<br />
There were tons of great spots to sketch in there, but I decided to challenge myself with a birds-eye view over the hundreds of clients on the lower floor.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtLiSwvhVlXU8bQ0HXt8xR8JWH5KqAKXr_69rdfrAC3k77JTJ_OcBNFu68PGCUciD7PXfZJnr4wE5bebgBbh-bRmPuvFamo0wrZ8ESlzRiaznj51rQD9tYI65n0V8-sN84vP7r6-cBp68/s1600/maastricht.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtLiSwvhVlXU8bQ0HXt8xR8JWH5KqAKXr_69rdfrAC3k77JTJ_OcBNFu68PGCUciD7PXfZJnr4wE5bebgBbh-bRmPuvFamo0wrZ8ESlzRiaznj51rQD9tYI65n0V8-sN84vP7r6-cBp68/s400/maastricht.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It was such an interesting viewpoint that I did a second sketch, this time focusing only on the people. So much can be said about a place merely through the body language of the people there!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTIbQpOdkgX9WKeW7326hzWv40Zma6HmjUY_QLjl4iBLfoER1C7htAPEoL-uNGm86siOmB3tbYcuQfJGwytMppC40_BtyOkyjUw-CTl9UJu4HlDwfYKGLk6KBV9y9fp8AlRtochY5CFFA/s1600/maastricht2ab.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTIbQpOdkgX9WKeW7326hzWv40Zma6HmjUY_QLjl4iBLfoER1C7htAPEoL-uNGm86siOmB3tbYcuQfJGwytMppC40_BtyOkyjUw-CTl9UJu4HlDwfYKGLk6KBV9y9fp8AlRtochY5CFFA/s400/maastricht2ab.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Only too soon it was time to share all the sketches and for the group photo. The USK Netherlands made a great little <a href="https://youtu.be/NXijP3-Z_BY">clip documenting the sketchcrawl</a>.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01002414176188172189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-322545007492987220.post-1636949479499328442017-02-01T15:00:00.000+01:002017-02-01T15:00:31.548+01:00Just wondering...I like to sketch random people from photos found online. It's a great exercise and, since they are total strangers, less pressure to make a good drawing.<br />
<br />
Old mugshots are particularly interesting. For one, I love how different people looked in the past. Their hairdos and clothes particularly. Some of the men even look positively dapper.<br />
<br />
Sketching these faces always makes me wonder what their lives looked like and why they were arrested.<br />

I have been remiss with publishing my sketches form the last Urban Sketchers' sketchcrawls, so here they are now.</div>

In December we went to the Christmas market, which is slowly becoming a tradition of ours.</div>

The Christmas market in the capital has grown a lot over the years an can now boast three main locations. This time I focused on the small ice skating rink on Place Guillaume II. The day was wonderfully sunny and the rink was full of people.</div>

In January we went to the Mudam. I was very pleasantly surprised at the big turnout: 17 people came to sketch with us this time!<br />
<br />
It was the last day of the Wim Delvoye exhibit, an artist that has already been shown at the Mudam several years ago. Here are a few of his works. Tattooed pigs (I have mixed feelings about them, but they looked so friendly I couldn't resist sketching them).<br />

It is adjacent to the capital and boasts its own small shopping centre, spa and cultural centre with sports fields and even part of the university of Luxembourg.<br />
<br />
Before the freezing temperatures started, I decided to go on a solitary sketchcrawl to explore Walferdange, or <i>Walfer</i> as the locals call it, armed with a fountain pen filled with ink and a small sketchbook.<br />
<br />
My stroll first took me to the local train station, or rather to the <i>Walfer Kulturschapp</i> with the train station in the background.This place looks almost like an abandoned shack and not so much like a place for culture, which is partly why I like it. I love when buildings are re-purposed, specially if it is for culture.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh26uDSnT9fwL0olqQqBKnq8zVI6-9mRx1OptGNr6qX4J7xqONLbZxHFl4EpNrnv_o9LIVZtP_FptzzUiVOift22EqxS5Pq-uIeBY9VfjPQ9AHrLFb8tzQGco6KKGDYO3eEpA37nNxHlCQ/s400/walfer3a.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The function of this building was a mystery to me for far longer than I care to admit</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next stop, the Prince Henri cultural centre with its football (or should I say soccer?) field. As chance would have it, a football game was taking place that afternoon. I wasn't curious enough to find out which teams were playing, but it gave me the opportunity to see the place in a more lively way.The teams were young, the players all teenagers, and the spectators probably mainly family and friends of the players.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0YKJBQ_BU6irhxXQFz99vFDbZLWqArO86Jyxyle5tdmctVg3yx69SOzRMwRbA9kewM9pP_VD-0kGUBNbuOUJ3vGrKJvK4rhjSQ542mFyoC2vh35LSGLD4c-Bez-YoOc0ZmOblE5Qo63A/s400/walfer4a.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Unsuspecting spectators being spectated on :D</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<i style="text-align: left;">Walfer</i> has several beautiful mansions and other interesting older houses, a real treat to sketch. I chose to try my hand at this one, mainly because it was on my way home, but there are several other interesting ones, which I will definitely sketch some other time.
<br />

<br />
I will have to organize a sketchcrawl around the commune sometime once the weather gets better.<br />
